The stormwater pipe and outfall structure at Corsair Bay, Lyttleton, is being replaced because the existing pipe has reached the end of its service life.
We’re replacing 330 metres of pipe, extending from just south of Park Terrace, through Corsair Bay Reserve to the shoreline.
Our stormwater system is an underground network of pipes that drains the rain off our roads, footpaths and from our gutters, diverting it into streams, rivers and eventually out to sea.
We’re working hard to get the job done as quickly as we can. The work is currently scheduled to be finished in late October. See the start works notice(external link) for more details.

Access to the beach
The current pedestrian pathway providing public access to the beach will be temporarily closed from 9 September to 16 October to allow the access road and pavement resurfacing works to be completed safely.
These temporary measures are necessary to allow the remaining works to be completed safely while protecting both the public and our crew. Public access to the pedestrian pathway will be restored once these works are finished.
The two parking areas above the beach and the toilet block will be closed while the work is underway. On-street parking will be available as usual on Park Terrace, and public toilets are available at Cass Bay and Naval Point.
Traffic impacts
We're in the final phase of the project. To complete the remaining work temporary traffic management will be in place from around 9 September to 16 October. This includes:
- Temporary traffic lights and a lane closure on Park Terrace between 42 and 53 Park Terrace
- Temporary parking restrictions
- A temporary relocation of the #8 Rāpaki bus stop towards Lyttelton
- Temporary closure of the current pedestrian beach access path.
