The Lyttelton Port(external link) is the major gateway for the South Island for goods freighted by sea. It makes a significant contribution to the regional and national economy.
The Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan (external link)was approved by the Minister for Canterbury Earthquake Recovery and released on 19 November 2015. Lyttelton Port was extensively damaged by the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and the Port’s infrastructure was already under pressure before the earthquakes.
The Recovery Plan will enable the Port to recover from the earthquakes and takes into account the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of the Lyttelton and greater Christchurch communities. It balances the need for a speedy recovery of the earthquake-damaged Port with the wider recovery needs of the community and is another milestone in the recovery of the Canterbury region.

A new cruise ship berth will be built by the Lyttelton Port Company. The new berth will be the first custom built cruise ship facility for Christchurch and will be able to accommodate some of the largest cruise liners from around the world.
