A building may become dangerous, affected or insanitary due to a number of reasons. This policy aims to address how Council will manage buildings that meet the threshold of a dangerous, affected or insanitary building.

This policy has been prepared to comply with s131 of the Building Act 2004, which requires the Christchurch City Council to have a policy on dangerous and insanitary buildings. The Building Act 2004 requires the policy to state the Council’s policy approaches regarding affected buildings, which are buildings adjacent to, adjoining or nearby to a dangerous building or dam.

The policy replaces the Council’s Dangerous and Insanitary Buildings Policy 2018.
