We've renewed the wastewater pipes on Flockton Street and completed a street renewal with traffic calming measures and road resurfacing.
Flockton Street road deterioration
Since Flockton Street reopened in May, we've identified areas where the road surface has deteriorated, particularly near the Westminster Street end of the street.
The project was expected to be technically challenging because of the ground conditions, and it’s possible this is contributing to the current issues.
We're investigating the issue
We’re currently investigating the issue to come up with a permanent fix. Once investigations are complete, we’ll provide more information and timeframes for getting this sorted.
In the meantime, temporary repairs are being carried out to ensure the road remains safe for everyone.
We’re also planning to proceed with a second coat of chipseal in October or November 2026. This is a scheduled part of the original programme.
What the original programme included
We renewed and upsized the pipes along the full length of Flockton Street, from Warrington Street to Westminster Street.
Following each stage of the wastewater works, we completed road pavement renewal and resurfacing along the full length of Flockton Street. This was intended to help minimise potential vibration from cars and buses.
We also installed four raised safety platforms to encourage safe speeds and mitigate the impact of increased traffic on Flockton Street following the opening of the Christchurch Northern Corridor. The slope of the safety platforms has been designed to prevent additional vibration issues.
