Te Aratai College cycle connection

Stage one is underway now.Read the works notice(external link), which includes the traffic detour.

There will be clear traffic management and safety signage in place while work is underway, to keep pedestrians, cyclists and road users safe. Please take care and follow all safety directions.

There will be detours in place at the Harrow Street/Aldwins Road intersection, temporary delays, lane closures and changes to pedestrian and cycling routes. Access to homes, businesses and schools will be maintained wherever possible.

Work will be carried out in seven stages. You can read the details below. We’ll send out updates to residents and businesses as we reach each stage to outline impacts in more detail and provide timeframes.

Stage 1 – Harrow Street and Aldwins Road new traffic signals

Late July to mid-November. The intersection closure will remain in place throughout works.

Work includes:

• new traffic signals and signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossings
• safety fencing at crossing
• removing the existing slip lane island
• new kerb crossings and footpath improvements
• tactile paving.

Traffic impacts:

• the intersection will be closed for the duration of the works, with detours in place, including changes to Route 80 (Lincoln–Parklands) bus services
• temporary no stopping/no parking restrictions on Bordesley Street
• westbound bus stops on Harrow Street will be temporarily relocated further west.

Stage 2 – Aldwins Road (Marcroft Street to Linwood Avenue)

Late July to mid-August. Work will take two weeks (weather dependent).

Work includes installing a combination of a shared path and separated cycleway on the eastern side of Aldwins Road from Animates southbound to Marcroft Street.

Traffic impacts:

• a short road closure at the intersection of Marcroft Street and Aldwins Road (three days)
• a southbound lane drop for the duration of the works
• limited southbound on-road parking on Aldwins Road.

Stage 3 – Aldwins Road (Marcroft Street to Ferry Road)

Mid-August to late August. Work will take approximately two weeks (weather dependent).

Crews continue south along Aldwins Road between Marcroft Street and Ferry Road installing the new separated cycleway and making improvements to the footpath.

Work includes:

• new kerb crossings and footpath improvements
• new road humps at Bass Street and Edmonds Street.

Traffic impacts:

• Southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work area.
• The worksite will move progressively along the road as work advances.
• Bass Street and Edmonds Street will be closed for two days each while new kerbing and road humps are installed. A detour will be available via Matlock Street.
• A temporary bus stop will be provided while the existing stop is relocated.
• Limited on-road parking while work is underway. 

Stage 4 – Ensors Road (Ferry Road to Sullivan Avenue)

Late August to mid-September. Work will take up to three weeks (weather dependent).

Work now moves to Ensors Road, southbound, between Ferry Road and Sullivan Avenue. Crews will continue constructing the separated cycleway and associated footpath improvements.

Work includes:

• new kerb crossings and footpath improvements
• tactile paving
• new road hump at Mackenzie Avenue
• mountable kerb islands at Sullivan Avenue.

Traffic impacts:

• Southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work area.
• Mackenzie Avenue and Sullivan Avenue will be closed for approximately three days each while works are completed; closures will not be at the same time to allow for a diversion route, with one being the other's.
• A temporary bus stop will be provided while the existing stop is relocated.
• Limited on-road parking while work is underway.

Stage 5 – Ensors Road (Charles Street to Ferry Road, northbound)

Mid-September to early October. Work will take around three weeks (weather dependent).

Work now moves to the northbound side of Ensors Road, progressing back towards Ferry Road.

Work includes:

• footpath reconstruction and new kerb crossings
• new road hump at Grenville Street
• mountable kerb islands at Frederick Street.

Traffic impacts:

• Northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane.
• Grenville Street and Frederick Street will each be closed for approximately one day each. Detours will be in place via Ferry Road and Osbourne Street.
• A temporary bus stop will be provided while the existing stop is relocated.
• Limited on-road parking while work is underway.

Stage 6 – Aldwins Road (Ferry Road to Harrow Street)

Early October to mid-October. Work will take around two weeks (weather dependent).

This stage is located outside Te Aratai College, with work planned to coincide with school holidays to minimise disruption to the school community and improve safety for students.

Work includes:

• footpath improvements
• new kerb crossings
• installation of road humps.

Traffic impacts:

• Northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. 
• Limited on-road parking while work is underway.

Stage 7 – Aldwins Road (Harrow Street to Linwood Avenue)

Late October to mid-November. Work will take two to three weeks (weather dependent).

This is the final stage of construction for the Te Aratai College cycle connection. Work will continue northbound along Aldwins Road between Harrow Street and Linwood Avenue.

Work includes:

• new kerb crossings
• footpath improvements.

Traffic impacts:

• Northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane.
• Newcastle Street will be closed for approximately one day while construction is underway. A detour will be in place via Harrow Street and Glasgow Street.
• Limited on-road parking while work is underway.
