Wairakei Road - wastewater upgrade

Details

This significant wastewater upgrade will be carried out in three stages.

Stage one

The first stage of work will start on 24 August and includes work at the intersection of Wairakei and Ilam Roads and down Wairakei Road to Aorangi Road. The work will connect to the work that was recently completed at the intersection of Wairakei Road and Aorangi Road as part of the Nor’West Arc cycleway project. The first week of work will be setting up for dewatering the site, pumping water from below ground, with full traffic management in place. Works include:

• Pumping water from below the ground to prepare the site for trenching.
• Trenching and excavation work.
• Installation of new pipes and manholes.
• Road sealing.

The manhole at the intersection of Wairakei and Ilam Roads will be the first part of the work and will have special traffic diversions in place to allow work to be carried out safely. This could include a no right turn from Ilam Road onto Wairakei Road. Once work at the manhole is complete, the contractor will lay pipe down Wairakei Road. 

Traffic impacts

Traffic management will be in place while the work is being completed, including shoulder and lane closures, one-way systems and the temporary removal of on-street parking.

Traffic will flow one way city-bound on Wairakei Road. Detours will be in place for affected traffic along Wairakei Road.

Detours will be in place for west-bound services on Route 8, affected bus stops will have temporary signage with directions to the nearest available stop, and MetroInfo(external link) will have the latest information on detours and temporary stop locations. 

A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place so we can keep our workers and everyone safe. Please follow the signage and be alert for changes to traffic management as the work progresses along Wairakei Road.

This first stage is expected to be completed by April 2027.

Dormer Construction will have a Christmas shutdown between 22 December 2026 and 11 January 2027, at this time work will stop and the traffic management will be reduced.

We will update you about any changes as the project progresses.

Stages two and three

Two further stages will follow. We will update affected residents and businesses about these as work is scheduled to begin. These future stages are expected to be completed by mid-2028.

Information for residents and businesses

Although we’ve worked hard to minimise the impact of our work on Wairakei Road, the work is likely to cause disruptions for local residents and businesses, as well as people visiting or passing through the area.

• Please follow the signage and keep an eye out for changes in traffic management.
• Water services and power will be maintained.
• Bins should be put out as usual.
• Any changes to bus routes will be shown with signage. For information on bus routes, visit www.metroinfo.co.nz/timetables/updates(external link)
• Driveway access to properties will be maintained. However, we may need to work in front of driveways at times. Our contractor will try to give you plenty of notice for this. However, if you need to get in and out of your property and they are in your way, please just talk to one of the Dormer Construction staff members and they will make sure you can use your driveway.
• There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, and we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.

Please put your bins out as usual before 6am on your collection day. Our crew will move and return them if needed.
