Details
From Monday 31 August 2026, we’ll be starting remedial works on the footpath and outdoor dining areas along Beach Road, between Rue Jolie and Church Street. This will include work on the established pōhutukawa trees within the road reserve, which are an important part of Akaroa’s waterfront character. An arborist is involved in the project to help protect the trees health and any plaques will be protected and reinstalled as required.
What we are doing
Work will include the removal and replacement of existing paving stones to re-level the ground underneath. Re-levelling will require tree pruning, root pruning, installation of root barriers and enlargement of tree pits. Work will start from the Thai Trading Rooms and move north, towards the fire station.
All Beach Road businesses are invited to a "Meet the Contractor" event from 9:30am - 10am on Wednesday 26 August on Beach Road, where they can find out more information and ask questions. The event will start at the THAI Trading Rooms at 71 Beach Road, and then work north towards the fire station. Please feel free to join the group as they approach your business to discuss the planned works.
Work impacts
- Pedestrian access will be maintained down Beach Road and into shops and businesses within the work site. Our friendly contractor will help people get around the site.
- Temporary traffic management (road cones, parking closures, signs and barriers) will be installed as a part of the works. Please follow all signage and instructions from staff.
- Cars will be able to travel down Beach Road, although some parking will be affected.
- Some tasks, including concreting, hydro excavation, and timber construction, will occasionally be noisy.
- Please speak to our contractor if you have specific access requirements, such as large deliveries.
- Work will have no impact on any services such as electricity, telecommunication, and gas.
We know this work is disruptive, and appreciate your patience and understanding.
Noise
There may be increased noise, dust and vibrations during work but it shouldn’t impact on your power, water, gas or phone services.
Safety
Safety is our biggest priority so please keep children and pets away from worksites.
Bins
Please put your bins out as usual before 6am on your collection day. Our crew will move and return them if needed.
